Overview
A Global Flooring Leader Ready for Its Next Chapter Milliken & Company is a global leader in performance materials, with a world-class flooring division serving both residential and commercial markets. Renowned for design innovation and product quality, Milliken has long relied on digital tools to bring its expansive catalog to life for customers. With a legacy portfolio of visualization and recoloring tools accumulated over decades, the time had come to make a decisive move forward. In partnership with The Ocean Group, Milliken embarked on a multi-phase digital transformation to consolidate fragmented platforms, modernize its customer experience, and position the brand at the forefront of AI-powered design visualization.
Two Platforms. One Problem. No Room for the Future.
Milliken’s digital design ecosystem had a split personality. The company operated two separate customer recolor platforms—one of which had become obsolete—and a set of visualization tools that, while functional, were siloed from the commercial business entirely. The consequences were felt across the organization:
● Customers had no unified self-service recoloring experience, creating friction and inefficiency in what should be a signature touchpoint.
● Competitors like Shaw and Mohawk had already built and deployed capable self-service recolor tools, leaving Milliken at risk of falling behind on a key differentiator.
● The commercial flooring business was locked out of visualization capabilities available to the residential side, limiting sales potential and cross-functional scale.
● Milliken Printworks’ ability to recolor quickly and sample easily—a genuine competitive advantage—was constrained by aging infrastructure rather than amplified by it.
● Internal collaboration was hampered by disconnected tools, redundant processes, and the absence of a shared platform roadmap.
The mandate was clear: consolidate, modernize, and expand. But doing so required a thoughtful phased approach that would replace legacy systems without disrupting business-as-usual for a complex, multi-stakeholder organization.

The Ocean Group partnered with Milliken’s digital, design, IT, and commercial teams to architect a four-phase delivery plan—starting with the foundational work and culminating in an AI-powered, immersive design experience. Phases 1 and 2 were executed in tandem to deliver maximum early impact.

Retired two fragmented legacy tools and replaced them with a single, unified platform—purpose-built to serve both residential and commercial customers, and architected for scale.
