Diving Into The Deep Blue

Born into a line of entrepreneurs and raised in Los Angeles, Jason Gilbert has never feared pushing past obstacles or creating new possibilities. So, in 1996, when he reached a crossroads – continuing to work for the family business or following his keen sense of opportunity in emerging technology- he dove into the digital age wholeheartedly.

To gain experience, Jason joined a large web design agency. He loved his work but with one big exception. He wasn’t convinced that this conventional model was best for his clients or the industry’s evolution. Limited services, inefficient, slow, and wasteful, with considerable overhead, made it impossible to service small to mid-sized companies looking for an agency partner to grow alongside them. He envisioned a new type of agency—one that was lean and agile, where he could always have the best-in-class talent and offer a wide range of services, making digital greatness attainable to all businesses no matter what size.

 

When contemplating the agency name, Jason, an avid surfer, understood the power and mystery of the ocean and the magic beneath its surface. As an excellent metaphor for the digital world, The Ocean Group name was coined, and a new agency was born.

 

After two decades of evolution and innovation, our outlook on what's to come is as enthusiastic as the day we started. We've never been so ready to be your digital change partner to secure your long-term success.

Warner Home Video

  • HQ in Malibu, CA
  • Selected by Warner Home Video to launch their eCommerce site
  • Helped Warner become the first major movie studio to sell their DVD movie library directly to consumers
1999

Microsoft

  • Selected as Agency of Record to launch Windows CE
  • Handled all digital advertising, web development, and mobile UX 
2000

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

  • Selected as AOR
  • Launched 1st eCommerce site, digital loyalty program, and email marketing program
2001

Dick Clark Corporate Productions

  • Selected to launch 1st rebranding effort
  • Executed brand development and created new name, logo and identity system
2002

Coca-Cola and Dick Clark Productions

  • Launched the 1st American Music Awards New Music Award nationwide competition (Pre-American Idol, The Voice, and AGT)
  • Handled branding, print, signage, collateral, and digital communications

  • Pre-Silicon Beach offices open in the heart of Santa Monica

 Leiner Health Products

  • Chosen by 1st direct to consumer vitamin manufacturer to launch a new product
  • Developed 1st online platform to generate a personalized supplement program and drive sales at Walmart, Target, and Sams Club

Action Sports Brands

  • Worked with a collective of dynamic brands: Volcom, The North Face, Channel Island Surfboards, Maui & Sons, ZJ Boarding House
  • Created digital 1st footprints, back-office system integration with eCommerce
2008

New Balance LA

  • Selected for their 1st eCommerce site with custom CMS
  • Launched online appointment system, virtual fit consultant, and direct mail campaign
2010

Adobe

  • Executed their 1st nationwide internal sales competition
  • Gamified their sales goals to increase engagement and camaraderie

Mellow Beverages

  • Launched the 1st brand in functional relaxation beverage category
  • Developed eCommerce site, print, investor presentation

  • Entered the sustainability space with 1st international client
  • Implemented a 360-degree North American market launch for the global textile reuse & recycling giant

Saltwater Loyalty (Product Innovation 2)

  • Our 2nd product, but 1st in the Loyalty space, supporting cities, shopping centers & business districts

A-Mark Precious Metals

  • Our first foray into the precious metals/investment space
  • Redesigned A-Mark’s web presence to include its historic expansion through website design, custom photography, and a corporate video
2018 – Present

Flooring Industry

  • 1st time collaborated with a collection of brands embracing digital transformation efforts: Lonseal, Bentley Mills, Milliken
2023

Bentley Mills

  • Deployed a new database platform to handle a wide array of products
  • Replaced the existing CMS and redesigned the digital product catalogue
  • Cut the tech team’s workload, enhanced sales, and elevated client satisfaction
